Chapter 16

Save her... Don't let the wolf get her... SAVE HER!

Javail jolted upright, sitting on patio furniture outside the small, golf-course-facing restaurant.

He blinked a few times, momentarily confused, then reached up and rubbed the sleep from his eyes.

Javail yawned as the morning sunlight streamed across the patio seating. He swirled his glass, causing ice cubes to clink in the confines.

The scent of coffee wafted up from the cold brew, and his fingers were chilled by the condensation slipping along his knuckles.

He sighed, the picture of contentment as he leaned back, studying the features of his new bride.

"You really are something, you know that?" he whispered.

Ayesha smiled sweetly, her cheeks dimpling as she did. Her auburn hair cascaded down her shoulders like a waterfall, and she held his gaze.

The two of them had fallen in love almost instantly, only six months ago. The engagement had been rushed. The wedding even faster.

Some had said they'd eloped, but really they'd just kept the proceedings small—only close family and friends.

And now...

He'd been waiting for some time for this vacation.

"Wine tasting this afternoon?" he said conversationally.

Ayesha nodded but then paused, raising a hand and gesturing at the waiter through the sliding glass doors.

The small restaurant overlooked a golf course behind the vineyard.

The rolling greens and tastefully arranged tree line created a bucolic setting against which to partake in a breakfast of mushroom omelets and fresh grape juice. The grapes came from the vineyard.

The ornate, wooden furniture on the patio was settled under two large, red umbrellas. Another couple was sitting across from them, clinking glasses together in amusement.

A third couple was standing in the doorway, glancing at the tables on the patio as if searching for more seating.

Ayesha looked at him and said, "It's going to kill me."

She was smiling pleasantly.

He blinked. "W-what?"

"I said it's going to kill me. Please stop it!"

He swallowed, blinking and rubbing at his eyes. "Umm..."

"I said did you want coffee?" his wife repeated.

Javail laughed. "Oh. Coffee? I thought you said, er, something else. Sure. I'll have another. Ice please."

His wife was still waving the waitress over.

He shook his head, feeling dizzy now for some reason. He wasn't feeling quite himself.

"Kill it before it kills me..." This time, he heard the words, but his wife's lips hadn't even moved.

He could spend hours studying those lips.

But now, as he stared at the outline of his wife's face, he felt shivers down his spine.

He let out a little breath, picking up the cold coffee and pressing it against his forehead, leaving a streak of icy condensation.

And then...

An image flashed across his mind. A horrible image of a dark, gray creature with yellow eyes.

He let out a little yelp and knocked over his glass. Ice went spilling across the table. And his wife turned to him, startled.

He bounded to his feet, apologizing profusely, and doing his best not to meet the gaze of the other restaurant-goers now glancing in his direction.

He could feel sweat prickling his brow, and his breath came in labored panting.

He knew what he had seen was not just a mere hallucination.
